if i remember correctly, hes not all about how great you are at speaking or writing in filipino, but more on the relevance of your answers to the discussions! he really isn’t a scary prof, just very knowledgeable on what he teaches so just keep engaging with his discussions and he’ll be happy w u! as for written works, it’s by grp so if you arent confident in your filipino writing, you can have it checked by your grpmates and even sir himself :) he’s very open to helping out esp throughout the sem

Late response but when it comes to recit? Totally fine speaking English. He's very much open to insights regardless of what language you use to answer. Also! Recit is very important to him, so make sure to read whatever he gives and answer as much as possible. It doesn't have to be an extravagant answer. As long as you can show him that you've done your part (by reading), he'll be happy. Good luck!more

Got him last quarter. We had 3 major assessments - a quiz + 2 group projects. Other than that, he gave quizzes din and a few discussion posts. Most of the tasks were groupworks actually. There were many readings din, but bearable naman. (I'm speaking for someone who's not really good with Fil sksks) Though I could say na medj mataas ata standards niya when it comes to papers. I really had a low grade on one of the assessments and I expected to get a B or maybe even C+ but then I was surprised that he gave me a B+. I would say B/B+ -able. Not sure for A, pero siguro kaya if you really know what you're saying and of course grammar + syntax and it's substantial. And I guess take note of his instructions talaga sa mga papers, clarify on what he wants to see, and make sure what you're writing is correct. (I got a low grade for this) For his synch, they were interesting naman, I think he really explained lectures really well. Although onti lang synchs namin sakaniya last quarter because of the suspensions that time.more

Alloo!! Currently taking him so here’s some survival tips: -He’s not really a terror prof but he’s pretty strict in his grading. Bulk of your grades will come from essays and the final paper so BRUSH UP ON YOUR FILIPINO AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET THE GRAMMAR CORRECT. YOU WILL GET MARKED DOWN IF YOU USE TAGLISH. -For recitations he’s pretty lenient with the language. Taglish is accepted but get the point across quick. -It’s best to really pay attention in the lectures and take notes because a lot of the time it’ll make sense if you’re just there and he explains it. Reviewing’s not really a must honestly. -70% of your grade will be from your pananaliksik. Expect a movie analysis with elements of critical theory VERY Frankfurt School, somewhat anti-West. He LOVES it when you critique globalism and consumerism. -I can’t stress how important it is to PICK YOUR GROUP MEMBERS WISELY. I’m lucky enough to have two other GOATs so really just get a good pick, manage your workload, and SUBMIT ON TIME. Overall probably a B-A-able if you’re a native speaker, C-B-able for non-natives.more

Hi! I took his class last school year’s second semester, and it was purely an online class. Our class size was super small (only four of us), so I'm not sure if sir would approach a bigger class differently. However, the subject was super insightful and I looked forward to attending our online sessions every week. Sir is an experienced and established industry producer, so when it comes to lectures, he really has a lot to say and tries to answer all the questions we have, showing how passionate he is about film production. He also made us watch a lot of shorts during class hours, asked us what we think and feel about them, and then discussed the other details of their production later on. Regarding the requirements, in the beginning, he told us that we would be accomplishing a lot. Yet, at least for me, our workload was not that heavy since we were just asked to pitch our own short film idea based on a particular short film, a brief presentation answering some guide questions about the short films we watched, one-pagers, and our final project, which is a more detailed pitch of our own short film. The deadlines for these can sometimes be confusing, so just clarify the details with sir; he replies fast naman. He was considerate and approachable too. He provided helpful feedback during synchronous sessions and whenever you asked for it. Since his class lasted for three hours, he gave some short breaks in between. What I liked about this course is that we were also given enough opportunities to attend events outside of class hours. Sir would forward invitations such as the Cinema 76 grand opening, workshops, some film festivals, etc. (I still get emails from him until now). Though he never returned our work, like yung may grade talaga so you wouldn't really know what to expect. Pero if you comply naman, I don't think you have anything to worry about. And if you do want to know your standing in his class, I believe he'll welcome your inquiries. Overall, I loved his class. It ignited my want to work in the film industry more. If you want a great and fun class along with high grades, take him!more

took her during intersession and was very motherly! ma’am favors those who are always present and participative. as long as she sees you enjoying her class, she’ll like you. it’s a plus if you’re extra/bibo when it came to the recitations or final presentations too :)) tip: prepare/practice before class since she puts you on the spot when it comes to answering qs in spanish. also, her tests and finals were what she discussed naman in class so do the discussion boards lang and you’re good. overall, easiest A in intersession for me!more

I don’t know if she does intercession and if i would consider her an easy A. But she is an A-able professor Tips: The class is all about recitations, you gotta keep on reciting and show effort on her class. She keeps stressing too that it’s hard to fail her class, as long as you put the effort in. (As someone who is tamad-tamaran but still got a C 😴) The quizzes are sort of reviews of the previous lessons, and as long you come to class prepared, you’d definitely get by. A lot of duo works, since SPA 11 is about conversational spanish. So you gotta get a partner that you vibe with/hindi tamad hehe. The recitations oftentimes are done in front of the class (well, kahit na sa harap gawin ay hindi makikinig mga classmates mo so dw) It has final exams, and IDK if i failed it but coming from a person that REALLY WAS TAMAD during the first sem, it was still answerable. Also answer the modules/discussion boards in the canvas since they are sort of pre-tests to the discussion you’ll have in class. (Wag niyo lang sagutan basta-basta, laking hatak yan for your grades) TLDR: With the right amount of effort, A-able siya. Di niya pinababayaan mga students niya if they missed a recitation and works and what not. She’s nice, ayon lang hehe. 👽👽👽more

Overall pretty alright. She's an 80 year old woman who teachers because she finds purpose in it and it keeps her mind sharp. She seems always happy to be there. She will tell you a lot about her life over the course of the sem. Personally not my thing but some people in my class seem to like that, so it all depends. The flow of her sessions usually goes starts with her explaining a concept then going around the class asking everybody one-by-one to use it in a sentence. Ex. First session she'd go "Hola, me llamo Heidi, soy Filipina, y tu como te llamas?" and then ask the class to reply back with their name. Concepts get more and more advanced but the flow is always like that. Sometimes the way she would ask questions give me a bit of stage fright, and I'd say something wrong, but overall, not a bad way to learn. Just remember to study a bit beforehand and try your best to speak spanish confidently.more

oof she’s motherly and all that but what i didn’t like was the fact that she sometimes pressures students to give the right answer and you can actually feel the disappointment in her voice if u dk what to say LMAO she also doesn’t really help you find the answer, she just repeats her question again and again. in terms of workload, every week you have to answer spanish execises on canvas. take note that i had her in the online setting and others would probably have different opinions of her (since i noticed that a lot of students praised her) but this is just my take. though, she actually likes to share the spanish culture to her students and you can consult with her and she’d be happy to help you out. HOWEVER, ez b+/A with effort. recite as much as you can confidently and learn the lessons by heart. (btw, i have spanish notes from señora’s class, feel free to pm me and i can give them to you! ❤ )more

during recit, he doesn't mind if you speak Taglish at all as long as he sees that you're trying your best to speak in Filipino/Tagalog and you have an accurate answer or near to the answer he wants to hear. for me, he is a so-so teacher who has a strong grasp to what he teaches. although sometimes he seems boastful (about him being a great writer in Filipino) and is unnecessarily vulgar during his discussions. I and many of blockmates got an A from his class.more

Quick disclaimer, I only took him for fili 12, so I'm not 100% sure how he is in fili 11 (but I think generally these are some quick tips) Always read the readings beforehand. He loves to have quizzes on them at the start of the class (at least, that was the case when he handled mine last year). Try and also research a bit about the authors and the societal/political/etc contexts, and any other major things you can connect to it. He loves it when you can apply the readings in a more modern context as well! Just try to explain as much as you can whenever you answer, while still keeping it cohesive, and you should be finemore

Things you should DO for his subject - Make sure to study/search/read all the readings before attending the synch sessions, trust me, it would definitely help you out a lot - Recite recite recite! This really pulled up my grade, even better if you got extra points for recitations (e.g. 9/7). Make sure you say something new or with substance - Learn how to close read (or else 😳)! This is what his quizzes are all about, even the very first one! Do try to research more about it to understand how to do close reading better - Turn on your cam and attend syncs! He would definitely ask every time for you to show your face lol Things you should NOT DO - Ask for extensions for quizzes (like as a class), he def doesn't like it lol - Say you don't know the answer (trust me, he will make you feel so bad) kaya it's a must to know the readings!! - Abuse "symbolism" (if possible, avoid!!) in your quizzes, he kinda thinks it's a high school or elementary thing idk (like saying light symbolizes hope kind of thing) - Try to avoid relating your quiz reading to something "far-fetched" (like finding another story or myth to compare it to) cus we never really learned his taste regarding that—he might just say it's "pilit na interpretasyon". Kaya I recommend that when doing the quizzes, just try to really read into the given reading mismo and try to give another twist/meaning into it within the story or author's context (if this makes sense). It's kind of like reading between the lines! Other Tips - You can try to ask for bonus projects/papers/DBs if you need to pull up your grades (he MIGHT give some) - Make sure he KNOWS you, kaya if possible, be pabibo talaga in class participations HAHAHA - It really helped me out a lot when I try to research about the given reading - e.g. background, author, unfamiliar words talaga Fili 12 with him is A-able with super duper extra hard effort HSHSJDJKDS he's really a good Filipino prof but please make sure you don't annoy him lol it's just gonna take a toll at you 🥲 Lastly, goodluck 10000x 🙏 Feel free to pm me if you have any questions abt him or his class 👁👄👁more

1. Attend synch sessions its rlly good for participation and for seeing how he thinks and lowkey what he expects from u in the essays 2. There were only like 10 requirements max and all of them were essays(or writing) except for one. 3. If he asks a question or asks someone to read a passage just do it, even if your answer is wrong it still counts for your participation which can rlly help. 4. Read his guidelines. He is very specific of what he wants and what he doesn’t. For the project he has consultations and its rlly helpful into seeing what he really wants from you. 5. Hard to A ngl, listen, read, observe, participate. Sounds simple but can often be frustrating. 6. Overall a rlly passionate prof who you can rlly tell loves what he is discussing. U just kinda need to understand him to ace his classmore

had him for fili 12 during Q4 last academic year and the overall experience was pretty good. his modules are structured in a way that surveys the history of panitikang filipino (so from pre-colonial to contemporary). i fondly remember our first module because one usually wouldn't expect (or at least i wouldn't) to start studying Filipino lit by asking "Kung nakatutula ba ang taong tabon." Basta read the readings and ATTEND synch sessions because sir is not the kind to regurgitate info that's already in the module. he'll deepen it pa. You will definitely learn a lot. But you also have to be prepared because if you attend synch sessions knowing nothing from the modules, you are better off with another prof cause he's the kind to take note of the times you participate by answering his questions and he'll only take note of it if you answered well enough. definitely A-able with hard work!more

He knows his topics very well and is emphatic in discussing his lectures. I honestly would take him again only because I feel like I'm watching a Balagtasan when he's teaching lol. ⁠ A-able but you have to endure his lectures and discussions because he randomly calls students for recitation. He likes students who add their input in the lesson and grades them for that! The downside is that he gets haughty if you can't recite well or if your answer is a bit far from what he's asking for. He also calls out those who don't participate in the class. NGL he can be a bit mean to students (IDK if that's intentional or not) ⁠ Sir Derain's requires zoom attendance and is strict about it. You have to message him ahead of time if you'll attend or not. ⁠ His modules and readings aren't heavy it's usually just short stories and poems. He's generous in giving grades too!more

Some tips: -Take notes cos he usually doesn’t have PowerPoints. -Listen to his instructions cos he’s very particular with how he wants things. -Try to do some prior research on your topics or reading materials. From what I recall, he’s very interested in the “eccentric” side of Filipino culture (aswangs, agimats, etc.) so if you could contribute to those discussions he might appreciate that. -For papers, give personal insights on the topics. Like how you relate to/ see the topic as a Filipino in a specific context. He’s still one of my all-time favorite profs in college cos I learned a TON of things from his class– things I still carry with me today. If you show him the respect and interest he and his class deserves then you shouldn’t worry.
