if i remember correctly, hes not all about how great you are at speaking or writing in filipino, but more on the relevance of your answers to the discussions! he really isn’t a scary prof, just very knowledgeable on what he teaches so just keep engaging with his discussions and he’ll be happy w u! as for written works, it’s by grp so if you arent confident in your filipino writing, you can have it checked by your grpmates and even sir himself :) he’s very open to helping out esp throughout the semmore

Late response but when it comes to recit? Totally fine speaking English. He's very much open to insights regardless of what language you use to answer. Also! Recit is very important to him, so make sure to read whatever he gives and answer as much as possible. It doesn't have to be an extravagant answer. Got him last quarter. We had 3 major assessments - a quiz + 2 group projects. Other than that, he gave quizzes din and a few discussion posts. Most of the tasks were groupworks actually. There were many readings din, but bearable naman. (I'm speaking for someone who's not really good with Fil sksks) Though I could say na medj mataas ata standards niya when it comes to papers. I really had a low grade on one of the assessments and I expected to get a B or maybe even C+ but then I was surprised that he gave me a B+. I would say B/B+ -able. Not sure for A, pero siguro kaya if you really know what you're saying and of course grammar + syntax and it's substantial. And I guess take note of his instructions talaga sa mga papers, clarify on what he wants to see, and make sure what you're writing is correct. (I got a low grade for this) For his synch, they were interesting naman, I think he really explained lectures really well. Although onti lang synchs namin sakaniya last quarter because of the suspensions that time.more

hahahhaha i cried in my dorm room when i thought i failed her class. tapos naiwan ko pala calculator ko sa office niya. so i had to get it back. failed 5/6 tests and got a D. If she were a better teacher i would probably have gotten a C.more

Hi! I took his class last school year’s second semester, and it was purely an online class. Our class size was super small (only four of us), so I'm not sure if sir would approach a bigger class differently. However, the subject was super insightful and I looked forward to attending our online sessions every week. Sir is an experienced and established industry producer, so when it comes to lectures, he really has a lot to say and tries to answer all the questions we have, showing how passionate he is about film production. He also made us watch a lot of shorts during class hours, asked us what we think and feel about them, and then discussed the other details of their production later on. Regarding the requirements, in the beginning, he told us that we would be accomplishing a lot. Yet, at least for me, our workload was not that heavy since we were just asked to pitch our own short film idea based on a particular short film, a brief presentation answering some guide questions about the short films we watched, one-pagers, and our final project, which is a more detailed pitch of our own short film. The deadlines for these can sometimes be confusing, so just clarify the details with sir; he replies fast naman. He was considerate and approachable too. He provided helpful feedback during synchronous sessions and whenever you asked for it. Since his class lasted for three hours, he gave some short breaks in between. What I liked about this course is that we were also given enough opportunities to attend events outside of class hours. Sir would forward invitations such as the Cinema 76 grand opening, workshops, some film festivals, etc. (I still get emails from him until now). Though he never returned our work, like yung may grade talaga so you wouldn't really know what to expect. Pero if you comply naman, I don't think you have anything to worry about. And if you do want to know your standing in his class, I believe he'll welcome your inquiries. Overall, I loved his class. It ignited my want to work in the film industry more. If you want a great and fun class along with high grades, take him!more

during recit, he doesn't mind if you speak Taglish at all as long as he sees that you're trying your best to speak in Filipino/Tagalog and you have an accurate answer or near to the answer he wants to hear. for me, he is a so-so teacher who has a strong grasp to what he teaches. although sometimes he seems boastful (about him being a great writer in Filipino) and is unnecessarily vulgar during his discussions. I and many of blockmates got an A from his class.more

Quick disclaimer, I only took him for fili 12, so I'm not 100% sure how he is in fili 11 (but I think generally these are some quick tips) Always read the readings beforehand. He loves to have quizzes on them at the start of the class (at least, that was the case when he handled mine last year). Try and also research a bit about the authors and the societal/political/etc contexts, and any other major things you can connect to it. He loves it when you can apply the readings in a more modern context as well! Just try to explain as much as you can whenever you answer, while still keeping it cohesive, and you should be finemore

had him for fili 12 during Q4 last academic year and the overall experience was pretty good. his modules are structured in a way that surveys the history of panitikang filipino (so from pre-colonial to contemporary). i fondly remember our first module because one usually wouldn't expect (or at least i wouldn't) to start studying Filipino lit by asking "Kung nakatutula ba ang taong tabon." Basta read the readings and ATTEND synch sessions because sir is not the kind to regurgitate info that's already in the module. he'll deepen it pa. You will definitely learn a lot. But you also have to be prepared because if you attend synch sessions knowing nothing from the modules, you are better off with another prof cause he's the kind to take note of the times you participate by answering his questions and he'll only take note of it if you answered well enough. definitely A-able with hard work!more

Things you should DO for his subject - Make sure to study/search/read all the readings before attending the synch sessions, trust me, it would definitely help you out a lot - Recite recite recite! This really pulled up my grade, even better if you got extra points for recitations (e.g. 9/7). Make sure you say something new or with substance - Learn how to close read (or else 😳)! This is what his quizzes are all about, even the very first one! Do try to research more about it to understand how to do close reading better - Turn on your cam and attend syncs! He would definitely ask every time for you to show your face lol Things you should NOT DO - Ask for extensions for quizzes (like as a class), he def doesn't like it lol - Say you don't know the answer (trust me, he will make you feel so bad) kaya it's a must to know the readings!! - Abuse "symbolism" (if possible, avoid!!) in your quizzes, he kinda thinks it's a high school or elementary thing idk (like saying light symbolizes hope kind of thing) - Try to avoid relating your quiz reading to something "far-fetched" (like finding another story or myth to compare it to) cus we never really learned his taste regarding that—he might just say it's "pilit na interpretasyon". Kaya I recommend that when doing the quizzes, just try to really read into the given reading mismo and try to give another twist/meaning into it within the story or author's context (if this makes sense). It's kind of like reading between the lines! Other Tips - You can try to ask for bonus projects/papers/DBs if you need to pull up your grades (he MIGHT give some) - Make sure he KNOWS you, kaya if possible, be pabibo talaga in class participations HAHAHA - It really helped me out a lot when I try to research about the given reading - e.g. background, author, unfamiliar words talaga Fili 12 with him is A-able with super duper extra hard effort HSHSJDJKDS he's really a good Filipino prof but please make sure you don't annoy him lol it's just gonna take a toll at you 🥲 Lastly, goodluck 10000x 🙏 Feel free to pm me if you have any questions abt him or his class 👁👄👁more

1. Attend synch sessions its rlly good for participation and for seeing how he thinks and lowkey what he expects from u in the essays 2. There were only like 10 requirements max and all of them were essays(or writing) except for one. 3. If he asks a question or asks someone to read a passage just do it, even if your answer is wrong it still counts for your participation which can rlly help. 4. Read his guidelines. He is very specific of what he wants and what he doesn’t. For the project he has consultations and its rlly helpful into seeing what he really wants from you. 5. Hard to A ngl, listen, read, observe, participate. Sounds simple but can often be frustrating. 6. Overall a rlly passionate prof who you can rlly tell loves what he is discussing. He knows his topics very well and is emphatic in discussing his lectures. I honestly would take him again only because I feel like I'm watching a Balagtasan when he's teaching lol. ⁠ A-able but you have to endure his lectures and discussions because he randomly calls students for recitation. He likes students who add their input in the lesson and grades them for that! The downside is that he gets haughty if you can't recite well or if your answer is a bit far from what he's asking for. He also calls out those who don't participate in the class. NGL he can be a bit mean to students (IDK if that's intentional or not) ⁠ Sir Derain's requires zoom attendance and is strict about it. You have to message him ahead of time if you'll attend or not. ⁠ His modules and readings aren't heavy it's usually just short stories and poems. He's generous in giving grades too!more

Some tips: -Take notes cos he usually doesn’t have PowerPoints. -Listen to his instructions cos he’s very particular with how he wants things. -Try to do some prior research on your topics or reading materials. From what I recall, he’s very interested in the “eccentric” side of Filipino culture (aswangs, agimats, etc.) so if you could contribute to those discussions he might appreciate that. -For papers, give personal insights on the topics. Like how you relate to/ see the topic as a Filipino in a specific context. He’s still one of my all-time favorite profs in college cos I learned a TON of things from his class– things I still carry with me today. If you show him the respect and interest he and his class deserves then you shouldn’t worry. Honestly, the best professor I’ve ever had hands down. Her negative reviews are outdated. I think the reason some students don’t appreciate her is because she really pushes you to learn and understand the material deeply. She expects a lot from her students, but that’s exactly why she’s so effective. She has definitely improved from how previous students describe her. Total 180 degree shift!!!! I came into college never having taken calculus before, and I was honestly terrified. But thanks to her, I ended up getting a good grade in her class! She explains concepts clearly, gives lots of examples, and knows exactly where students tend to struggle. Her lectures are super organized, and her teaching style just clicks. Out of all the math professors I’ve had in my life, she stands out by far, not just for how she teaches, but for how she actually makes you want to get better at math. I’ve had her as my prof for three times now (Math 10, Math 21 & Math 30.13) because I genuinely learn best from her. She’s also funny, has this really encouraging way of challenging you. If you think you’re bad at math, she’s the kind of professor who can change that mindset. Don’t let the negative comments throw you off. She’s god-tier at teaching math, especially if you're someone who struggles with it. Trust me, she’s worth it.more

I took her for MATH21 during SY2023-2024. Get a private tutor honestly; I got a D during my first test, was able to raise it to roughly a B+ for the future tests, and got B on the final grade. I didn't learn much from her and had to self study a lot. Her grading isn't actually so bad since she gives effort points. It just so happens that she can't teach properly. Her tests usually have an "A" question where that weighs enough to be the difference between a B+ and an A. Personality wise she is pretty strict and can play favorites, but just make sure you self study and you'll be finemore

I got her for math 12 also!!! get her! she's super chill at first I got scared cos of the other reviews but she was actually pretty ok!! Her LTs are super based on her lecture and kaya to get an A. Presentation for the final project was also chill and she was so lenient about it. (She was just particular with it being creative and unique. She uses powerpoint during lecture which was really useful and she sends her powerpoint if you ask her but not all the time. Just recite a lot and don't cut her classes. If your class is small lang always prepare yourself cos she will make you write your answer on the board and you'll have to explain it to the entire class. :)more

\\\ ONLINE CLASS VERSION \\\ This is for those that need a B or higher for a major subj 🥲. Took her for Math 30.13 and 30.14 last semester and here are my thoughts from someone who would consider himself slightly just below average in terms of math skill. [TL;DR HOW TO PASS] - lots of self-study; the modules are walls of texts and pictures - sync sessions are just answering practice problems - use the book to fill in your gaps of knowledge about the topic, and answer the many different kinds of problems on there. These questions will have similar form in the exams. - you will learn 10x faster if you collaborate together with your classmates in helping to solve difficult math problems. You understand each other’s different ways of viewing the problem and I sweaaar if you understand how the difficult problems work, this class becomes MUCH easier - Ma’am is approachable! Her sync sessions deal with the topic with a strict schedule that she follows to a T and I’d recommend consulting her if you need it! - A is not impossible. I guarantee you’ll get a B and up if you’re just diligent with this class. But don’t be surprised with C/C+ tho, that’s usual as you learn along with the course. [CONTENT/MODULES] - Self-study that’s it. Some modules and concepts were easier to understand, while others I literally had to hire a tutor explain it to me because reading about the concept was just NOT ENOUGH (especially the foundational concepts like limits and derivatives) - To be quite frank, I had to go through this course only knowing HOW to do the mathematical processes and rarely ever understanding the WHYs of it deeply. I partially blame this on the full online setting, but even in ma’ams sync sessions the “whole idea” is rarely touched on (at least in my experience). If you asked me what’s the purpose of an anti-derivative, I wouldn’t be able to answer you. I’d know how to get it, but that’s about it. (But maybe this is just me being stOOpid so I don’t know) - the book, you’ll need it for practice problems and sometimes, concepts are better explained there than in the modules so also refer to it when you can. But the reason why it's so invaluable is because of the many different practice problems that are sure to come out in the exams. PRACTICE AS MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF PROBLEMS AS YOU CAN one bad experience of mine was that I focused on the types of problems we would answer constantly in sync sessions and in problem sets BUT THEN this question came up that I didn’t know how to answer because I wasn’t used to that type of problem BUT WE DID ANSWER IT LIKE ONCE IN LIKE THE FIRST SYNC SESSION FOR THE MODULE AND WE NEVER TOUCHED ON IT AGAIN BUT IT CAME OUT SO YOU CAN GUESS THAT MY ANSWER WAS LIKE 1+1 = oranges. Not fun [SYNC SESSIONS] - Honestly, you could skip these just fine if you’re someone gifted in math because all she does is go through practice problems FULLY EXPECTING YOU TO HAVE UNDERSTOOD THE MODULES COMPLETELY. It's really more for just clarifying stuff tbh. - For me, I kind of had to attend them to solidify my understanding of the process, but again, if you’re someone who did advanced math stuff in high school, then I think you’re ok (just as long as you still practice obviously) [WORKLOAD] - in terms of required workload, we had 1-2 LTs or quizzes, then 2 Problem Sets (grouped 😚) and then a Finals, so honestly not that much because they’re sprinkled fairly throughout the quarter (we were quarterly) - in terms of studying for the quizzes and answering the problem sets tho? Prepare to dedicate AT LEAST a quarter of your week diligently answering practice problems from the book. It is not enough to understand how to do the process, you must practice different types of problems because you’ll never know what will end up in the quiz/lt. - exams follow a similar pattern: multiple choice -> Fill in the blank -> then Open-ended. The types of questions are every variety you can find in the book. [CONSULTATIONS] - I personally never was able to attend one because I was able to grasp the content enough that I only really needed to thoroughly practice with the problems in the book - She is super approachable though, and the past reviews about her droning on about respect or other random topics never happened throughout my semester with her. If anything, her sync sessions were proper enough and they really did focus on the lesson. Don’t be afraid to consult her!! she actually made me laugh sometimes when she would tell a joke in her sync sessions if that counts AHHAAH [TIPS] - your classmates are your best friends oh my goodness, SERIOUSLY DO NOT TRY TO ANIME SOLO THIS TYPE OF CLASS. You will learn 10x faster and much more efficiently if you help each other out understand difficult practice problems. - For almost every difficult open-ended questions, you would have 2-3 different ways to solve it that would all lead to the same correct answer. This is important because some methods will be easier for you than others so PLSSSS help each other. - PRACTICE PROBLEMS PERIOD(.)more

i had maam d for math 10, is it bad that I don't really hate her that much? HAHAHAHAH yes. she's condescending. she's not the best at teaching either and her tests are sometimes iffy (but they arent too hard). she has a lot of demands but sometimes contradicts her demands lol. she'll also judge u if you have questions during her class. Also no gadgets unless she has instructions w them. i wouldn't necessarily run away or loadrev if u have maam d tho i eventually got used to her BS and realized that shes actually very goofy that i end up laughing at her class. At the end of the day, she curves so im happy lol Idk if its different for 30.13 but thats my review for math 10 😅more
