if he likes your class then you'll never have quizzes (i was lucky enough to be in this class). likewise, if he hates your class, he can give surprise quizzes. very temperamental prof with interesting viewpoints but if you can pretend to care about what he has to say then you should be fine! slides get uploaded naman on canvas but they're info overload. usually rambles in discussions so don't expect coherence.more

For me there were no quizzes Only assignments. (Individual reflection paper, discussions, group project, group infographic, etc) but so many slides

Got B+. No quizzes or exams but there are assignments for every module. Except for the first assignment, all the others are group assignments. So you should make sure to get sincere groupmates. One of the group assignments also includes an infographic.more

I was his beadle, sat in front, and "took" "notes" during class and all my groupmates (both male and female) did the same (engage with him, answer his qs, laugh at his jokes). We consistently got the highest grades on almost every output even if most of them were half assed and rushed. Don't expect clear or fair grading from him, but just use class time to read the material instead and ask thoughtful questions that aren't about his wife.more

Just become his beadle. Dami ipapagawa sa yo but I think he still gives a grade incentive if you're his beadle. Kahit wala it forces you to show up and interact w him every synch which can make him think that you're active and trying to learn. Try this at your own riskmore

am i an outlier? had him for socsci 12 in intersession. i am a woman and got an A as well. hes not a prof i would take if i wanted to learn meaningfully but hes not too bad imo. for women - he actually talks a lot about his wife and praising women so idk. i was surprised about it when we were having class because i thought he did have misogynistic views idk if hes racist (?) - or at least he didnt show it to us. i remember him speaking a lot about encouraging us to study abroad, gain ideas and bring them back and fix the philippines. he works with red cross too and i remember being early for class once and he was asking a lot of us about our laptops because he was doing research on what he could provide to his scholars i do agree - getting an a is reliant on giving him what he wants but my experience with him wasnt too bad. id say b+ to a if u only care about getting a good grade and put in some effort. note - he doesnt provide slides, nor using canvas. its google drive everything: everyones grades, submissions and readings. my advice: take notes of key points in class and just use those for whatever projects he makes you do. that usually gets me an "excellent"more

First of all, be his beadle, you basically get plus points for that. Grading: Honestly the way he grades is a bit bizarre because you kinda need to figure out what exactly does he want in your paper. It can be difficult but you can definitely find out the strategy to getting an A everytime. He is an Easy B and you can get an A if you're lucky. Lectures: You will NOT understand anything in his lectures even if you try. He is extremely passionate about the topic even if you don't understand anything. It's extremely entertaining at times but when you want to take class seriously, you won't learn anything. He frequently talks about his wife and he can probably make a quiz about her and we'd get an A because he talks about her that frequently. He frequently uses "Diba?" and "Correct?" and somehow that keeps be engaged cuz it's the most engaging part of his class. In conclusion, rely on the readings, you won't learn anything in his lectures other than his wife. Workload: Honestly, the workload isn't super heavy imo but they're all groupworks except for one. Every paper, you are individually graded for it. You stay in the same group until the end of the sem so be sure you're cool with ur groupmates. He also doesn't use canvas so look out for discussion boards to answer in the GDrive that he uses. Yes, he uses GDrive for everything, you find submissions, readings, grades etc. Others: He is possibly homophobic in some way. He once made a joke about the LGBTQ+ community and that caught me off guard cuz it was probably offensive. I don't think he's a misogynist because he loves his wife so much and praises women often. He is probably racist even though he worked in many marginalized places around the globe which is quite bizarre. He's very passionate about his advocacies too, especially on stuff like Disaster Risk Reduction. Overall, Sir Art is my favorite prof, but for the wrong reasons. His lectures suck and I didn't learn anything in his class. He is extremely entertaining even if you don't learn anything. His stance on may things is extremely confusing, just like his lectures. His classes are kinda cuttable because honestly he doesn't do much class-related activities other than the online discussion board. Just do the readings, be pabibo whenever you can, and you should be fine. I don't recommend him if you want to learn anything but I recommend him if you want a class to pull your QPI somewhat.more

My review as his beadle for SocSci 11 and 12: ⭐Teaching Style › Lecture Style Sir Art’s lectures feel like a tito storytime. They are anecdotal, so he would go on rants about his own experiences or observations. If you try your best to listen, the stories he shares are related to the topic anyway so ideas do not feel too abstract. His jokes and comments can be on the comedic side though. A lot of students multitask during his lectures because the environment is very chill. If he feels like the class is not paying attention anymore, he would call a random person from his attendance sheet to recite. The questions are not too hard since he would typically just ask for your thoughts. When it comes to pacing, sometimes he would spend a lot of time discussing one slide because of the long rant he gave, and then he would end up speed running the remaining slides by just summarizing them or reading the key points since his slides are extremely wordy and are composed of pictures of the important paragraphs from the readings. › Use of Readings and Slides He curates readings and modules intentionally so that they would build off of one another to create a cohesive narrative on modernity. Sir Art’s readings are digestible, and you do not need to know them to a T in order to understand. Summarizing the main points would help because it gives you a clearer grasp of how his anecdotes connect to the readings. If you check the syllabus, there are required readings and supplementary readings. You just need to familiarize yourself with the required ones, but the supplementary ones can actually be used for his class requirements. When I asked him what readings we should use for our paper and asked if the required readings were what we should just use, he said they were too basic lol › Class Atmosphere The overall class vibe with Sir Art feels very warm and paternal. He frequently calls students “nak” or “mga anak,” which sets a relaxed tone. When he gets upset, he has that disappointed-dad energy, especially when he lectures about proper citations because he really wants to avoid plagiarism issues. ✨Housekeeping & Admin Matters → Syllabus This is basically the bible of his class. When you ask him a question, he will answer it and then remind you to refer to the syllabus. If he has already answered the question before or has answered a similar question, he will just send a screenshot of the pertinent part of the syllabus that may or may not answer your concern. → Consultations He no longer holds face-to-face or online consultations. For the first requirement (the individual major paper), he initially opened 10-minute consultation slots on the class concerns Google Sheet, but instead of meeting with us, he provided comments directly on the outlines we submitted. For the second requirement (the group major paper), he also left comments on our documents, but he did not reply to follow-up questions in the comment thread. You can message him on Messenger for clarifications, but it helps to ask very specific or leading questions to get a clearer response. We then asked him to review our revised outlines, but he refused to do so. → Clarity of Instructions Sir emphasizes giving students full freedom in how they want to write. You can submit in English, Tagalog, or Bisaya, but, he does not give guide questions or prompts for outputs. When students ask for direction, he usually refers them back to the syllabus for the Cycle Learning Objectives. Formatting requirements are clearly stated in the syllabus and his slides, so make sure to review those. He does provide a rubric, but it is quite broad. It is more of a general description than a detailed breakdown of what distinguishes one score from another. At one point, when I asked why I received a 94% instead of a 97%, he simply asked why I cared so much. If you have clarifications, it’s best to raise them through the beadles first. If you are the beadle, don’t hesitate to repeatedly ask him questions when needed. He prefers that class concerns go through beadles before him. Even if he sounds moody at times, still ask. He does respond, and he definitely remembers students who ask consistently. → Communication Style Sir Art also teaches in other universities and is pursuing his PhD, and he does volunteer work as well, so he usually has a lot on his plate. Because of this, his reply speed can range from about an hour to a full day. He doesn’t believe in micromanaging requirements and tends to take a “bahala na kayo, malaki na kayo” approach. If he has concerns with your work, he will leave comments on your file and also write notes in the class concerns sheet. However, he doesn’t check that sheet regularly nor does he address concerns immediately, so it’s best to follow a reminder system: ask your beadle to bump him after a week, and if needed, bump him yourself the week after. You can also approach him before or after class if you have questions. He will acknowledge what you say but will usually remind you to message him and your beadle again so he doesn’t forget. On another note, feel free to make kwento to him about anything under the sun. He will definitely engage with you! Again, he treats his students as his kids HAHA 🌱 Workload & Requirements ↳ Individual Major Paper He asks you to relate one to two readings to either a personal experience or a social issue. The tone is still academic and not creative writing, so think of it as a persuasive academic paper that uses narrative or descriptive elements only to support your analysis. From observation, he tends to appreciate papers that show self-awareness and reflexivity. ↳ Group Major Paper Use direct quotes from the readings, explain their meanings, and break down their implications. After that, connect each part of the quotes to your chosen social issue. The key is to show how the theory operates in real life and how your example reflects the concept of modernity he is teaching. ↳ Group Audio Visual Presentation Do not merely compile b-roll clips with voice-overs. He tends to give higher grades to groups that appear on screen, conduct interviews, or go outside campus to gather footage. He is also not very strict with the time limit as his sample videos were around 6 minutes even though the syllabus states a 5-minute maximum. Just avoid going past 6 minutes. ↳ Group Infographics Do not treat this like a typical infographic with short, bite-sized text. You can use full sentences as long as the layout stays readable. Avoid copy-pasting entire paragraphs, but it is okay to include more text than usual. Use pictures, icons, and visual elements to break up the content. He also was not strict about the A4 size but please just avoid having more than two pages. ↳ Group Oral Exam This is part of his final requirements. You can take it as a group or individually, depending on whether you stayed with your group for the synthesis paper. Each student needs to present their own course synthesis and module synthesis, with a combined total of around six minutes for the entire group. ↳ Group Synthesis Paper From what I observed across my class and other sections, the only submission that got an A was written in Tagalog. However, the main factor he seemed to value was how the group focused on a specific field, explained how modernity shapes it, argued what is wrong with how it currently works, and presented how it should be rebuilt differently using alternative modernities. ↳ Discussion Boards/Written Quizzes These are usually unannounced and given either at the start or end of class. Sometimes, he assigns them as homework so we can process the readings more deeply. The answer limit is very tight, usually only 30 to 50 words per question, so you need to be concise. He also grades these quite strictly, so do not expect high scores even if your answer feels complete.more

I don't really get the other reviews but he was the easiest A with minimal effort (tbf i took him intersession) I don't really get how he's racist?? He worked in red cross and told a lot of stories about his work (mind you I came in to his class expecting racism based on comments before so when I heard he worked in Africa I thought that was it but literally nothing was bad) For the sexism i'm really not sure as groups with women got high marks naman in our class. Imo you really won't learn anything for him because he yaps most of the time (Priest/Philo type sermon) but I had fun with his class as it wasn't really that demanding. Don't take the other comments too hard and go to class with an open mind and just laugh at how funny he is. DIBA!? Tldr: Easy B+. A with some effortmore

Anonymous member 739 got him as my pre-enlisted for socsc 11, one of the worst profs i've had! i find the "disadvantaged if you are a woman" comment interesting cus i worked hard on one of my group major assessments (creative video). i was proud of our work because it was comprehensive and well edited (by me! and i was with two other girls) but we got -2 for creativity daw no explanation whatsoever 😂 but my guy classmates who dogshowed their their project and recorded it on zoom got higher than me. higher score in creativity too lolll. i agree, i think he's a-able only if you really pander to what he likes. if you're looking for life-changing profs who give effective lectures and give understandable grades/criticism, he's not for you!more

took him for socsci 11! i can vouch for everything anon member 753 said lmao thats exactly how he was in our class additional stuff: - grading criteria/rubric is basically non existent so you don’t really know what to do and if you ask him, he’ll say to refer to the ppt which doesn’t even help. our class gave him feedback on this but he still insisted to just look at the ppt 🤷‍♀️ - ppt are 150+ slides per module because he just repeats them. its super disorganized and badly designed - super lenient on deadlines - unpredictable grader - emphatic speaker, leans towards emotionally impacting you but honestly did not learn anything from the classmore
